If you ask whether the tempered glass can be cut or not? the answer is that: tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled.

Tempered glass is a type of prestressed glass that creates compressive stress on the glass surface through chemical or physical methods, thereby improving the strength and safety of the glass. the surface of tempered glass has compressive stress, while tensile stress is formed inside. this structure allows the glass to better offset stress when it is subjected to external forces, thereby enhancing its resistance to wind pressure, cold and heat and impact.

Manufacturing Processes for Tempered Glass:

The manufacturing processes of tempered glass mainly includes the following steps:

1. Cut:

First, cut the regular glass sheet into the desired size, this step is to ensure that the dimension of final product meet the requirements.

2. Edging and Cleaning:

Cut glass needs to be edged and cleaned to remove impurities and make the glass surface smoother.

3. Heating:

Put the treated glass into the tempering furnace for heating, usually to a temperature near softening temperature of the glass. this step is to bring the glass to a certain temperature for subsequent tempering.

4. Quick cooling‌:

Heated glass needs to be cooled quickly, usually through forced convection or injection of cooling media (such as air, water). Rapid cooling will produce different shrinkage rates on the surface and inside of the glass, thereby forming compressive stress and tensile stress, improving the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the glass‌.

5. ‌Inspection and Packaging‌:

Finally, the tempered glass is inspected to ensure that it meets the quality standards before packaging‌.

Continuous Tempering Furnace for Heating and Cooling Tempered Glass Sheets:

‌Tempered glass production equipment‌ includes loading machines, cutting machines, edge grinding machines, cleaning and drying machines, and double-chamber tempering furnaces. These devices play a key role in the production process of tempered glass, ensuring that each step is completed efficiently and accurately‌

The heating and cooling times for different thicknesses of glass also vary. For example, 5-6mm glass needs to be heated at a high temperature of about 700 degrees for 240 seconds and cooled down for about 150 seconds; while 8-10mm glass needs to be heated at the same temperature for 500 seconds and cooled down for 300 seconds.

Through the above steps and equipment, the production of tempered glass can be completed efficiently and with high quality.

Advantages of Tempered Glass:

--Safety‌:

When tempered glass is damaged by external forces, it will break into small obtuse-angled particles similar to honeycombs, which is not easy to cause harm to the human body.

--High strength:

The impact strength of tempered glass is 3-5 times that of ordinary glass, and the bending strength is also 3-5 times that of ordinary glass.

--‌‌Thermal Stability‌:

Tempered glass can withstand temperature changes of up to 150°C and has good thermal stability.

--‌Wide range of uses‌:

Tempered glass is widely used in high-rise building doors and windows, glass curtain walls, indoor partition glass, lighting ceilings, sightseeing elevator passages, home appliances, electronics, furniture, glass guardrails, etc.

Disadvantages of Tempered Glass:

--Unprocessable‌:

Tempered glass can no longer be cut, drilled and processed. The glass can only be processed to the required shape before tempering.

--Risk of self-explosion‌:

Tempered glass has the possibility of self-explosion when the temperature difference changes greatly, but ordinary glass does not have this problem.

--‌Appearance defects‌:

There may be wind spots and uneven thickness on the surface of tempered glass.

Applications of Tempered Glass:

Tempered glass is widely used in many fields such as construction, transportation, and home appliances. ‌ In terms of construction, tempered glass is used in high-rise building doors and windows, glass curtain walls, indoor partition glass, lighting ceilings, sightseeing elevator passages, etc. In terms of transportation, tempered glass is used in places such as car windows that require impact resistance. In terms of home appliances, tempered glass is used in places where heat resistance is required, such as electrical panels.

--High-rise building doors and windows‌:

Tempered glass is often used in windows of high-rise buildings due to its high strength and impact resistance, providing better security.

--Glass Curtain Wall‌:

The weather resistance and safety of tempered glass make it a common curtain wall material in modern buildings.

--Interior Partition Glass‌:

Tempered glass is used for interior partitions, providing good transparency and safety.

--‌Lighting Ceiling‌:

The light transmittance and weather resistance of tempered glass make it an ideal material for lighting ceilings.

--Sightseeing elevator passage‌:

Tempered glass is used in the sightseeing elevator passage to provide transparency and safety.

--Furniture‌:

Tempered glass is used to make glass dining tables, glass tea table, glass bedside table, glass cabinets and other furniture, adding modernity and durability.

--Car Windows‌:

Tempered glass is used for car side windows and rear windows to provide safety protection.

--Electrical appliance panel‌:

Tempered glass is used for control panels of ‌microwave ovens, ‌oven and other appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, etc. It is high temperature resistant and easy to clean.

In conclusion, once we finish that article, we learn that the tempered glass cannot be cut or drilled, If you need to cut or process tempered glass, it is recommended that you seek professional help to avoid doing it yourself and causing unnecessary risks. In daily life, you should also pay attention to the safe use of glass and avoid impact or other external forces on the tempered glass to extend its service life.
